Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Wednesday as they look to finish in the top four of the Premier League. Erik ten Hag’s players will be looking to return to their winning ways. They should be heavily burdened by the goalless draw against Newcastle United at the weekend.
In that match, a number of refereeing decisions were made against them. To make matters worse, Fred and Marcus Rashford failed to capitalise on some outstanding chances. Meanwhile, Spurs beat a determined Everton 2-0.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a spectacular hat-trick in this very match last season and Antonio Conte’s men are hoping that this won’t happen again. They have three wins in all competitions and hope to bring that to Old Trafford.
However, we expect the Red Devils to beat the Lilywhites at home. Let’s take a look at five reasons why Manchester United will win against Tottenham Hotspur tonight.
#5 Manchester United’s recent record against Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United have won their last three Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur. Last season they won 3-2 when Ronaldo scored a hat-trick.
United have also scored three goals in each of their last three games against the North Londoners. This is a game where the red devils have not really been tested lately. In fact, they have only lost one of their last seven meetings with Spurs in all competitions.
#4 Tottenham Hotspur’s poor away form
Tottenham Hotspur have just two wins in their seven away games in all competitions so far. One of those wins was against Nottingham Forest, who are fighting for relegation.
It’s also worth noting that Spurs have only managed to win once away from home against the five ever-present teams in the Premier League in their last 19 Premier League games. They have gone winless in three of their last four away games in all competitions.
#3 Injuries and Suspension to key players
With Richarlison suspended and Dejan Kulusevski very doubtful for today’s game, it is unlikely that Conte will advise his players to go with the swing towards goal. Emerson Royal will serve his third match ban in three games tonight.
Son Heung-Min is not in the best of form either. On the other hand, Manchester United, apart from an extremely poor performance against Manchester City, have been quite threatening lately. Neither Matt Doherty nor Ivan Perisic have been in good form lately and Conte can’t do much with a weakened attack.
#2 Tottenham Hotspur have so far failed in the big tests
Spurs have played two of the Premier League’s “top six” so far, Chelsea and Arsenal. They drew against Chelsea and lost 3-1 to their north London rivals. Spurs also beat Sporting CP in the Champions League.
So far, they have not had any big wins. Meanwhile, Ten Hag’s men have won against Liverpool and Arsenal. After the 6-3 loss away to Manchester City, United will not want to lose to the Premier League’s second best team anytime soon.
#1 Christian Eriksen factor
Christian Eriksen will return from illness on Wednesday against Tottenham Hotspur. Erik ten Hag confirmed at the pre-match press conference that the Danish international is back in training.
Eriksen brings a lot of creativity, positional discipline and technical skills to Manchester United’s midfield. He can dictate the game from deep and is also a very hard-working footballer. If he is fit to play, he will play for Tottenham Hotspur against his former club.
Eriksen was often decisive for Spurs in that game. He will probably do it again, but this time it won’t be to the Lilywhites’ advantage.
